This is a novel dermatological technique used to eliminate non-melanoma skin cancer. It is a non-invasive technology that avoids dermatological surgery in many cases, mainly in actinic keratosis and superficial basal cell epitheliomas.

Photodynamic therapy is primarily used for treating superficial non-melanoma skin cancer, but it has many other applications in dermatology, mainly in skin rejuvenation, acne, and other inflammatory and infectious diseases.

The application is very straightforward and consists of two phases:
  • First phase: the dermatologist prepares the skin lesion when necessary and then applies a cream containing a photosensitive active ingredient. This product is left to incubate for 1 to 3 hours, depending on the lesion to be treated.
  • Second phase: after the incubation time has elapsed, the area is cleaned and illuminated with a red light lamp for 10 minutes. This light activates the photosensitizer, causing selective destruction of the affected cells.
Where is it applied?
  • Face (especially forehead, cheeks, nose and scalp)
  • Neckline
  • Hands and forearms
  • Legs or other sun-exposed areas with superficial lesions
How long do the effects of the treatment last?
The effects of the treatment can be seen within a few weeks. Although a single session is usually sufficient, in some cases it may be necessary to repeat it. The results are long-lasting if proper care is maintained, including photoprotection and regular check-ups.
Other dermatological indications
Photodynamic therapy is mainly used for the treatment of superficial non-melanoma skin cancer, but has many other uses in dermatology, mainly in:
  • Skin rejuvenation
  • Acne
  • Inflammatory diseases
  • Localized skin infections
